A journey through the history of the Hotel Osterkrug

osterkug husum history

It was in the early 1980s when the renowned 5-star Parkhotel in Husum closed its doors. The hotel was not only known for its luxurious rooms, but also for its impressive congress hall, which was in keeping with the Parkhotel. The exclusive contract with the city of Husum allowed only the Parkhotel to use the congress hall. However, the owner at the time had other plans - he wanted to close the hotel and convert the site into flats.

A new chapter began in the summer of 1980

In the midst of these changes, my father stepped onto the scene. In the summer of 1980, he acquired the traditional Osterkrug from the Otto Jens and Emma Jebe family. What could have been a simple takeover turned into an affair of the heart. My father had not only completed his training at the Parkhotel, but had also worked there for ten years as restaurant manager. This step finally enabled the previous owner of the Parkhotel to realise his plans and convert the hotel into flats.

Husum and the Osterkrug - how it was back then A 75-year tradition

The Osterkrug itself has a long history dating back to 1949. The choice of name for the Osterkrug is special: according to anecdotal evidence, every pub facing east was called Osterkrug back then. Today, there are only two of these traditional jugs left - one in Husum and another in Treia.

A fruitful partnership with the town of Husum

Thanks to my father's extensive experience in the hotel industry and especially in the management of the congress hall, a new contract was concluded in 1980. This contract enabled the Hotel Osterkrug to operate the congress hall in Husum. This cooperation with the city of Husum proved to be extremely successful for decades. However, our partnership came to an end in 2017 when a new congress hall was built and we were no longer responsible for running it. This decision marked the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of our hotel.

Growing successes and expansions with outbuildings

During our co-operation with the city, we experienced unforgettable highlights: At peak times, we had 100 employees working in both our hotel and the congress hall. Our guest list included numerous events, lunches and an à la carte business. In 2022, the à la carte offer was reduced to further specialise our service. Today, our team consists of 15 dedicated employees.

Expansion and modernisation

Over the years, the Hotel Osterkrug has grown continuously. We expanded our property by purchasing outbuildings (pictured right) and building new function rooms. In addition, the number of rooms increased to a total of 55. A comprehensive renovation and modernisation took place in 2010 in order to offer our guests the highest level of comfort.
